Obituary for Ameena "May" Zion Mahfuz

Ameena “May” Mahfuz, 98, of Nashua, passed away on January 23, 2023, at her home surrounded by family. She was born in Detroit, MI on Sept 1, 1924, daughter of the late David Zion and Selma (Abide) Zion. She was the loving wife of the late Fouad “Fred” Mahfuz for nearly 35 years. They were married in Boston, MA on March 31, 1946.

May was a graduate of Highland Park High School. During WWII at the age of 16, May was employed at Lincoln Factory as a riveter making airplane parts. The woman during WWII were referred to as “Rosie the Riveter”. Her 5 brothers were deployed during WWII, and she was proud to do her part.

May’s love for her children and grandchildren was always first on her mind. May enjoyed reading and gardening. Her green thumb showed in a perfectly manicured yard and garden which she maintained for 30+ years. May was known for her great cooking, especially her middle eastern recipes. Her abilities in the kitchen made visiting a delight to all.

May is predeceased by her sisters: Mary Hazamy and Eleanor Said. She is also predeceased by her brothers: Harry Zion, Amos Zion, Alex Zion, Carl Zion, and Norman Zion.

May is survived by her children: Nadia Mahfuz, Maleeka Lloyd, Sy Mahfuz and his wife Janet, and Ali Mahfuz. She also leaves behind her grandchildren: Lisa Ameena Mahfuz and her spouse Lisbeth Melendez Rivera, Amie and her husband Jim Hiatt, Fouad Mahfuz, Medina and her husband Tyler Gauthier, Adam Lloyd, Dina Lloyd and her husband David Malling, Linnea Faith Shirley, and Alisha Layne Perkins. Survivors also include her great grandchildren: Maylee Hiatt, Max Hiatt, Myles Gauthier, Josie Gauthier, Adriana Shirley, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

The family would like to extend their appreciation for Home Health and Hospice who provided wonderful care at home for the last several months of her life.
