Obituary for Bienvenido C. Garcia

Bienvenido “Cristobal” Garcia, age 86, passed away in Nashua, New Hampshire on June 24, 2022, after a period of declining health. He was known to most people as Cristobal but to us he was known as Papi. Papi was born in Santiago, Dominican Republic on January 9, 1936–son of Inocensio Garcia and Elisa Rodriguez. His most significant relationship was to his wife of 20 years, Esperanza Salas.

Papi was a great example of just how complicated people can be but most of all an example of how people can change for the better. As the youngest in the family, there is much I don’t know about him but I know that he could be many things. He could be large and scary when in a bad mood but also loving and funny. He could be quick to judge certain people but also the first to give anything away to someone who needed it. He made his share of mistakes as a husband and a father but he always looked at his daughters with pride calling them his prendas (jewels). He led a difficult life but in his last years worked hard to grow as a person.

Papi used to carry a little bottle of hot sauce in his shirt pocket to put on his eggs. He loved watching Spanish soap operas and yelling at the villains. He worked as a carpenter and from way too young of an age worked as a shoe shine boy. He came from nothing but had a big personality and unmatched charm. Papi could make people laugh so hard that they would pee themselves. He had a big, booming, raspy voice and was always put together—dressed in slacks and dress shirts and with a cap on his balding head. He didn’t like his clothes to be wrinkled and he didn’t like any of my sister’s boyfriends. He had a radiant smile and a gift for storytelling. If this obituary seems honest it’s because I think it’s what Papi would want. He despised people who pretended to be something they were not. He could never be fake and he would never want to be remembered as perfect.

Papi was loved by many despite not always knowing how to love himself. When he lost one of his daughters to her battle with alcoholism, our sister Darmin Yudelkis Garcia, he immediately stopped drinking and smoking after a lifetime of vices—an example of what this loss signified in his life. In his old age, he owned up to and sincerely apologized for his mistakes. He learned to be a better listener. He took pride in his family and softened after decades of being hard to be around. He showed us that it’s never too late to change your legacy and this is how he will be remembered.

He is survived by two sisters and one brother, by his only wife, six daughters, four sons, nine grandsons, seven granddaughters, two great-grandsons, and one great-granddaughter and many friends.
