Obituary

Darrell A. Spencer, 79, passed on September 8, 2020 at Nashua Crossings. He was born November 2, 1940 in Bangor, Maine, son of Clayton and Kathleen Spencer. He was the husband of Beverly (Bowers) Spencer and married for 59 years.

He was a 1964 graduate of University of Maine, Orono and later received his Master’s Degree from George Washington University. He received his Eagle Scout at 16 years and was always proud of that honor. A Captain in the Army, he served 7 years stationed in Germany and Vietnam and was always connected to NSA throughout his military career. Darrell achieved many accolades in the service: The Bronze Star, the Joint Service Commendation Award, and was Airborne qualified. He worked tirelessly with a Vietnamese orphanage while serving there.

Darrell was a very active member of First Church Nashua for many years and served on several boards and committees. He cherished his First Church family.

He was a Director of Medicare/Medicaid in New England for 30 years in the Boston office. After his retirement he advised many people on Medicare issues. He also made it a mission to help many Veterans get their VA benefits due them. Darrell enjoyed helping people wherever and whenever he could. Bev always said “his middle name was help” and told him she would put “YOU MADE A DIFFERENCE” on his headstone.

Darrell is predeceased by his parents, his only sibling and younger brother Dale, two infant children and infant grandchild Owen. He is survived by his wife Beverly; son Scott, his wife Karen and grandson Clay from Candia, NH; son Steve, wife Karin, granddaughter Lydia and grandson Samuel from Minneapolis, MN; daughter Karen, her husband Rob, granddaughter Melissa and granddaughter Abigail from Limestone, TN. A sister-in-law Pat, nephew Jeff and niece Christy from MN. Five sisters-in-law and their families from Maine and New York, a brother-in-law and his family from Arizona.

NOTE: Darrell often joked about all the Karen’s in his life (three in the family plus several more he worked with in Boston and ushered with at Church)!!

Darrell and Bev liked to travel when they could. They explored Europe while stationed in Germany, traveled to many places in the US together, and had several memorable cruises with friends.

He loved going to the Bowers family camps in Maine every summer. So remote and peaceful that you “relax yourself tired”. The family call it Almost Heaven and it is enjoyed by members of Beverly’s large family as well as many family friends through the years.

Darrell loved sports and was happy to have had a wife who loved sports as well. He and Bev golfed (not well they would joke), downhill skied around the country, and did lots of hiking including climbing Mt. Washington.

He was LOVED and will be missed by so many.

At a time like this we like to look back at all the good times our families had together: camping, hiking, boating, skiing, cruising and the many other frequent get-together activities. All of that plus 18 years of car pooling to Boston. Good bye old friend, until we meet again. RIP.

Thoughts and prayers are with you all. Yes, help is what he did. I know as a member of my family was the recipient of that which he gave so willingly. Will always cherish the wonderful memories of our pot luck group.
