Obituary for Dewi Richards Brown, MD

Dewi Richards Brown, MD, of Hollis, NH, beloved husband of the late Barbara Maria (Williams) Brown, passed away at home on February 9, 2024, after a lengthy period of illness. Dewi was born in Cwmgwrach in the Neath Valley, Wales, on March 4, 1935, to David Brown and Margaret (Richards Lewis) Brown and grew up in the nearby town of Glynneath. After attending Neath Grammar School, he earned a coveted place at Imperial College of Science & Technology, London, where he studied chemistry before deciding to pursue medicine at Charing Cross Hospital Medical School.

Dewi excelled as a medical student - missing the Sir Gordon Holmes Gold Medal by a single mark - and as a sportsman for Imperial College and then ‘The Cross.’ He captained the rugby and cricket teams at ‘The Cross’ and played both sports for United London Hospitals. During his time as a medical student, Dewi also met his future wife, Barbara. They married in April 1959 at Brompton Oratory and remained devoted to each other thereafter.

After completion of medical school in 1960 and post-graduate training in 1962, Dr Brown began medical practice in Newport, Wales. Later, he and Barbara and their young family emigrated to North America, settling in New Hampshire. Dr Brown worked in general practice in Nashua for a decade before his appointment as Medical Director of the Emergency Department of Catholic Medical Center in Manchester. This led to his recruitment as Chair of the Emergency Department, King Fahad Hospital, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia where he also became a published expert on the treatment of Middle Eastern snakebite and other topics.

Upon returning to the Nashua area, Dr Brown devoted the remainder of his career to the practice of Occupational Health, including a long affiliation with St. Joseph Hospital where he was named medical director for Occupational Health Services, overseeing all components of the hospital’s comprehensive occupational health program. He retired from medicine in 2016.

Dr Brown was a Fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians; a Fellow of the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine; and a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh.

Dewi’s interests outside medicine included his family, golf – which he played avidly for 50 years with diminishing returns despite two (witnessed) holes-in-one (both from 186 yards) - and travel. Following retirement, Dewi and Barbara revisited – often with friends – their favorite destinations of Italy, Portugal, London, and their home country of Wales. In Dewi’s final years, reading became a great passion and comfort.

Dewi is predeceased by his parents and his beloved wife, Barbara. He is survived by his brother, Dr Peter Brown and his wife Dawn of Rhiwderin, Wales, to whom he remained close throughout his life; his children (Nicholas Brown and his wife Karen, Caroline Brown and her husband Tom Graham, Simon Brown and his wife Kathleen, and Jason Brown and his wife Daina); his grandchildren (Justin Brown, Lucas Graham Brown, Matthew Graham Brown, Dylan Brown, Tess Brown and Finn Brown); and his extended family in the United Kingdom.

SERVICES: A reception for Dewi’s colleagues, friends and family will be held in the spring, with details to follow.
