Obituary for Doris A Smyth (Dean)

Doris Addie Dean Smyth, (age 90) of Bedford, NH passed away on November 20, 2023, after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer's disease. Born in Dorchester, Mass, on October 6, 1933, she was the daughter of the late Charles Albert and Elizabeth Josephine (Ledford) Dean. Doris graduated from Somerville High School in Somerville, Mass. She was the devoted wife of Thomas R. Smyth until his passing on Oct.10, 2001.

After raising her family, Doris worked as a teacher’s aide in Cambridge, Mass and then as an administrator’s assistant for Fenton Shoe Company. Doris will be remembered for her colorful quilts and blankets that she made for family and friends, beef stew, and pinwheels.

Doris is survived by her five children: Wendy Weaver and husband, Dale of Lancaster, PA.; James Smyth and wife, Barbara of Plymouth, N.H.; Roselyn Jay and husband Steve of Lancaster, PA.; Emily Smyth of Malden MA; Nathaniel Smyth and wife Tanya of Littleton, CO. 6 grandchildren, Nathaniel Smyth Benjamin Weaver, Thomas Weaver, Tara Weaver Bair, Samuel Smyth, Hannah Smyth Mathison; as well as 9 great-grandchildren. Doris is also survived by her sisters, Barbara Robinson, Ruth Atkinson, and Pauline Baker as well as several nieces and nephews. Doris was preceded in death by her husband, Tom, sisters Elizabeth Proctor and Marion Bunton, and brothers Roy Dean and Charles Dean.

SERVICES: At Doris’ request, there will be no viewing or funeral services. A private burial will be held at the Cambridge Cemetery in Cambridge, Mass. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Doris’ memory to the Alzheimer's Association online at or by mail at 225 N Michigan Ave, Floor 17, Chicago, IL, 60601.
