Edward grew up in Avoca and upon turning 18, enlisted in the Army in 1958 where he first served in tanks and artillery before joining the 225th military policemen. During his 22-year career within the Army, Edward went overseas seven times, serving in North Korea, the Berlin Wall and completed three tours of duty during the Vietnam War (1967, ‘68,’71). He was awarded with five Good Conduct Medals, the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal and Vietnam Cross of Gallantry. His final medal was awarded to him decades later upon the discovery of a clerical error that had prevented Edward from receiving the medal in 1971. On Thursday, February 19, 2009, surrounded by his family, Edward was awarded the Bronze Medal for meritorious service during a ground operation in Vietnam on July 1, 1971. When awarded, the Bronze Medal is the fourth-highest combat award of the U.S. Armed forces.
Upon his retirement from the Army in 1980, Edward moved to Nashua where he lived with his wife and two children, working for the New Hampshire Department of Transportation. Edward loved spending time with his family at their home, hiding Easter eggs for his grandchildren to find in his backyard every Spring and loading the entire family up to go on camping trips in his RV during the summer.
