Obituary for George Emmanuel Sophos Jr.
George E.Sophos, Jr., 88, of Nashua, died Sunday, April 4, 2021 at the Hanover Hill Health Care Center in Manchester. He was born on July 15, 1932, in Lowell, MA, the son of George E. Sophos and Marion (Linscott) Pappas. He was the loving husband of the late Dolores (Gendreau) for 50 years.
Mr. Sophos lived in Nashua for most of his life. He was a devout catholic and was a member of several churches over the years, with the most recent being St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church. He was a veteran of the United States Army and served in the Korean war. He worked for many years at the Improved Machinery Company and later he worked for the City of Nashua in the school system. After his retirement he volunteered at the Mt. Carmel Rehabilitation and Nursing Center.
One of his greatest joys in life was ballroom dancing with his wife. He especially enjoyed listening to big band music, with one of his favorite bands being the Glenn Miller Orchestra. He had a great interest in learning about ancient history, with Egypt being one of his favorite subjects. He also enjoyed watching classic Hollywood movies such as the ones starring Humphrey Bogart and old westerns starring John Wayne, among others.
He was predeceased by his brother, Nathan, his sister, Marion Antonowich and his son, Mark.
He is survived by three sons and a daughter-in-law, David and Marquetta (Bell) Sophos of Merrimack, Steven Sophos of Hudson and Eric Sophos of Nashua, and three daughters and sons-in-law, Karen and John MacCarty of Billerica, MA., Lynn and Paul Mulhern of Dracut, MA. and Gail and Paul Richard of Shelton, CT., many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, and three sisters-in-law, Masako Gendreau, Eileen Gendreau and Teresa Sophos.
SERVICES: A walk-through visitation will be held on Thursday, April 8, 2021, from 5 to 7 pm, at Davis Funeral Home, One Lock Street in Nashua. Due to COVID restrictions all guests entering the funeral home will be required to wear face masks and follow social distancing. A funeral service will be held, Friday, April 9th, 2021, 10:00 am at the St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church, 777 West Hollis St, Nashua, NH, with Bishop Christian officiating. Interment will follow immediately after the ceremony at the Old St. Louis de Gonzague Cemetery, Nashua. Family and friends are invited to attend.
