Obituary for Ian J.H. Clarke-Pounder
Mr. Ian J.H. Clarke-Pounder, age 93, of Nashua, passed away Nov. 18, 2022 at Danbury Hospital in Connecticut following a brief illness. He was the husband of his childhood sweetheart the late Brenda (Memmott) Clarke-Pounder with whom he shared 66 years of marriage until her passing in 2017.
Ian was born in Leeds, England, UK on Feb. 18, 1929, son of the late James Young and Daisy (Clarke) Mitchell. He attended Leeds College of Technology, McGill University, and Indiana State Business School.
As an engineering student, Ian began working in 1943 at Sulzer Bros. in various departments involved with the assembly and testing of submarine and locomotive diesel engines, and later as a draftsman designer in the drawing office. Drafted for the war in 1945 at age 16, his deferment ended at age 21 at which time he served two years in the Royal Air Force from 1950-1952 as a junior technician and acting corporal. Following his RAF service, he returned to Sulzer Bros. until he emigrated to Quebec, Canada to work as a research engineer for Ingersoll-Rand in designing machines for the pulp & paper and mining industries; he designed and tested the vertical dewatering & sump pumps for the Canadian locks of the St. Lawrence Seaway.
In 1970 Ian was transferred to the US Division of Ingersoll-Rand, a company he would eventually retire from, working in New Jersey and then eventually settling in Nashua, NH in 1973. During his tenure in Nashua, he held various positions in the company through Vice President, and held some 17 patents both domestic and internationally which enabled him to travel the world extensively transferring technology, negotiating sales and licensing contracts.
As a Christian, Ian was an active church member throughout his life. Originally confirmed in the Church of England in Leeds where he was a choirboy until his voice broke at age 18. Following his marriage to Brenda in their native UK, they have, with their family, attended various Methodist Churches in the UK, Canada and USA. Since settling in Nashua, Ian was very involved with the Main St. United Methodist Church of Nashua, serving as Lay Member to the Annual Conference, Bible Class leader and various committees. Throughout his travels, he attended and visited churches whenever he could; one of his most fond memories was a trip to the Holy Land in the year 2000 with his wife and the Hour of Power Group.
Ian held various memberships, affiliations and positions in the US, Canada and UK including the Technical Association Pulp & Paper Industry (TAPPI), past chairman of the Pulp Manufacture Division; Member Emeritus of the Alkaline Pulping Committee; Corporation of Professional Engineers (PQ), and the Engineering Institute of Canada; Canadian Pulp & Paper Assoc (CPPA); and The Institution of Mechanical Engineers (UK). He was also involved with the Boy Scouts, being awarded “King’s Scout” in the UK and has proudly served in positions of troop leadership in the UK, Canada, and as a board member in Pennington, NJ. Locally he was a past member of the Nashua Country Club, Nashua Chamber of Commerce, a current member of Rotary Club of Nashua and winter member of Seminole Lakes, FL Rotary Club.
Aside from his distinguished professional career, family came first and foremost to Ian. He enjoyed many sports including soccer, tennis and golf, playing cribbage and cards. He enjoyed wood carving various small wildlife figurines and giving them to family and friends. He was also known for developing working solutions to problems around the home and keeping up with the “honey-do” list. But he was most commonly known by all as the “hugger” as he believed hugging a person was the best way to communicate and show that you care!
Ian is survived by his children: Janet Clarke-Pounder, Richard Clarke-Pounder & wife Audrey, Joanne Kopanski & her late husband Mike, Linda Clarke-Pounder Fontaine & husband Richard, and Ian Garry Clarke-Pounder & wife Joanna; his grandchildren: Henry Hughes, Lawrence Hughes, Trish Dever, Ian Clarke-Pounder II and his wife Jessica, Christine Kitch and her husband Sean, Catherine Clarke-Pounder, Daniel Clarke-Pounder, Heidi Hoffman and her husband Eric, Tina Atkinson and her husband Spencer, Jonathan Fontaine and his wife Laura, Elizabeth Clarke-Pounder Ryan, Julia Sullivan and her husband Ryan, Rachel Clarke-Pounder and her fiancé Matt McDevitt, Amy Lee Clarke-Pounder ; and great grandchildren: Emily Hughes, Elizabeth Hughes, Raymond Hughes, Matthew Clarke-Pounder, Henry Clarke-Pounder, Charlie Clarke-Pounder, Oliver Kitch, Davy Kitch, Tia Hoffman, Austin Atkinson, Zoey Atkinson, Claire Fontaine, Leon Fontaine, Raymond Fontaine, Addison Ryan and James Garry Sullivan. All of his friends at the Hunt Community especially Peggy Hammer his caring friend, companion and travel guide, whom he adored!
