Obituary for James Edward Conlin

James Edward “Jim” Conlin, died Sunday May 10, 2020 at Crestwood Center, Milford, NH after a period of declining health. Born on August 7, 1932 in Nashua, NH, he was the son of the late John Conlin and Katherine (Riley) Conlin. He was also predeceased by his brother John Conlin and his sister Anne Tuttle. Jim grew up on Taylor St. in Nashua where he developed a life-long passion for golf by caddying and playing at the Nashua Country Club with his childhood friends. Jim graduated 9th in his class from Nashua High School in 1950. He went on to attend Dartmouth College where he graduated in 1954. Upon his graduation from Dartmouth, he served his country during the Korean War. After receiving his honorable discharge, he went on to get his graduate degree from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.

He married the love of his life, Marguerite E. Granger, on October 14, 1961 at St. Christopher Church in Nashua. Together they raised 5 children, Eric, Kevin, Ann, William and Thomas. He worked for many years at the former J.F. McElwain Company until the business moved out of Nashua in 1981. At that point, he embarked on a second career as a college professor. He worked for almost 20 years at Fitchburg State College and Rivier College, positions that he enjoyed immensely. He retired in 2000 due to health-related issues.

In his later years, he enjoyed following his grandchildren’s activities and took great pride in their accomplishments. When his grandson Michael graduated 9th in his high school class, Jim was quick to point out that by virtue of his identical finish some 64 years earlier he was “the leader in the clubhouse”. In retirement, he played golf on a regular basis with his friends, his sons and his grandsons, none of whom could beat him despite their best efforts. Jim enjoyed all the Boston sports teams but was most passionate about his beloved Patriots and Celtics.

Jim was a kind and gentle man and a devout Catholic. He was a communicant of St. Christopher’s parish and insisted on attending Mass each Sunday despite some physical limitations that at times made it treacherous for him to do so. He always had a positive attitude and when met with adversity he would remark that he thought things would “all work out in the end”. He was a humble man who never spoke of his accomplishments nor did he ever utter a negative word about anyone.

Jim is survived by his wife Marguerite, his children Eric (Brenda), Kevin, Ann (Frank), William, Thomas (Brooke) and his beloved grandchildren Jack, Michael, Elsbeth, Maris, Sophie, Reegan and Nealey. He will be missed greatly by all who loved him but we take solace in the fact that the golf courses in heaven are open and he and his friends likely have an early tee time.

The family would like to express their gratitude to the staff at the Crestwood Center and Kim and Cassie from Home Instead for the kindness they showed him in his final years.
