Obituary for John J. O'Brien

MSGT (RET.) John Joseph O’Brien, 84, died 5 July 2020 in Nashua, New Hampshire due to complications from COVID-19. John was born on 19 April 1936 in Washington Heights, New York, New York to parents John O’Brien, Sr. and Hilda (Vido) O’Brien.

Upon graduating from the Machine and Metal Trades High School in Manhattan, John enlisted in the US Air Force in 1955 where he ultimately achieved the rank of Master Sergeant as a Jet Engine and Aircraft Mechanic for a variety of fighters and fighter-bombers including the F-4, the F-102, and the F-111.

John was stationed in various locations throughout the US, Europe, Africa, The Middle East, and Asia (Vietnam Veteran). He was honorably discharged in 1979 and relocated with his wife and daughter to Bangor, Maine where he lived until being diagnosed with Vascular Dementia in 2008.

John enjoyed model trains and airplanes, crossword puzzles, lazy weekend drives, cooking, and watching Walker Texas Ranger and NCIS from the comfort of his well-worn rocking chair. He was known for his eclectic taste in music and his booming tenor voice.


He was predeceased by his wife, Dolores (Schwendig) O’Brien in 1999 and by his younger brother, James O’Brien in 2012. John is survived by his daughter Karen O’Brien, as well as his younger sisters, Ellen Vasquez and Patricia Knoblock.

SERVICES: As per John’s wishes, no memorial services will be held. John’s ashes will be buried beside his late wife at the Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Augusta, Maine.
