Obituary for Lois Engleman (Matthews)

Lois Engleman, 87, passed away at The Huntington at Nashua, on December 24, 2020 surrounded by her 4 children. Lois grew up in Rockaway, NJ and was the devoted wife of John Engleman, who pre-deceased her. John and Lois shared 59+ wonderful years of marriage and raised their family in White Plains, NY. After retirement, they shared precious times at Cape Cod for 15 years.

Lois graduated from Middlebury College where she earned her bachelor’s degree. She also completed a year at Drew Theological School. Many years after starting their family, Lois worked in White Plains as a teacher’s aide for students with learning disabilities. She also worked part-time as a real estate agent for Nelson-Vrooman.

Lois had numerous interests including gardening, painting, tennis, bicycling, downhill and cross-country skiing and spending time with friends. She was devoted to God and raised as a Methodist. Lois taught Sunday school, enjoyed spiritual retreats, sacred dance, Bible study, and praying for others. Lois’ faith was central to her life.

She leaves her 4 children and their spouses; Karen and Ron Burger of NY, Susan and Richard Schubert of MA, Linda and Al Hamel of NH and David Engleman of NY; 4 grandchildren, Cooper Hamel, Kimberly, Amy and Brian Schubert; her brother’s wife, Jeanne Matthews; her nieces and nephews Marcia Edgar, Clifford Matthews, Mike, Bob and Lynne Doble; and cousins including Marjorie Ewing, Edith Engleman, Barbara Donohue, Tom Engleman, Scott and Beth Brodley.

SERVICES: A virtual celebration of life will be held for family and friends on February 6, 2021 at 5 pm EST. Memorial donations to The Huntington at Nashua’s Employee Scholarship Fund, Osterville (MA) United Methodist Church or Memorial United Methodist Church in White Plains, NY.
