Obituary for Lura Mae Machell (Bixby)

Lura Mae Machell, 90, of Nashua, NH, passed away peacefully on May 25, 2020, after a brief illness. Born on March 1, 1930, in Littleton, NH, she was the daughter of Kenneth and Grace Bixby and sister to Kenneth Bixby, Jr.(deceased). Lura married William G. Machell on April 13, 1949.

She is survived by her husband, William, 92, of Nashua, NH. Also surviving are her three children, Linda Stockdale and her husband Alan of Providence, RI, Sandra Walsh and Kevin (deceased) of Sarasota, FL, and Dr. John Machell and his wife Sandy of Hollis, NH. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Evan Sicuranza and his wife Katy Westcott, Jenna Sicuranza, Shan Patterson, Colin Walsh and his wife Sarah, Cameron Machell and Colton Machell, her great grandchildren, Chandler Patterson, Reese Patterson and Finley Walsh.

Lura graduated from Littleton High School in 1948, where she was a cheerleader, played basketball, and acted in the school play. She also sang in the church choir.

She attended the University of New Hampshire, and later worked as a successful real estate agent in Schenectady, NY. Lura also worked at Schenectady Savings Bank, where she was involved with savings bank life insurance.

When Lura and her family moved to Nashua, New Hampshire, she continued her career at the Lowell Institution for Savings in Massachusetts, where she was the assistant treasurer and manager of the certificate department. Lura remained there for nearly 25 years until she retired.

She enjoyed spending time with her family, and they often hiked and camped with her brother-in-law David Machell (deceased) and his family.

Affectionately known as Lou, she was the life of the party and everyone loved her wonderful laugh. She was a skilled seamstress, a whizz at crossword puzzles, played bridge and had a beautiful voice. In the early days, on the piano, she played the Boogie Woogie Blues with ease. Lou was known for her sense of humor, and she loved to dance.

She had a big heart, and was lovingly known as Nana and Grandma. Lou loved her grandchildren, her great grandchildren, and also her granddoggies.
