Madeline (Welch) Bernard passed away peacefully on Friday, October 30, 2020 after a short period of declining health. She was surrounded by her family.
Maddy was born on August 31, 1928 in Nashua and was the daughter of the late Richard and Esther Welch. She was the widow of Andrew (Benny) Bernard with whom she enjoyed 35 years of marriage prior to his death in 1992. She was a graduate of Nashua High School and Keene State College where she majored in elementary education. In her early career Maddy taught at local schools and then took time off to raise her family. Maddy returned to education and taught and retired from Charlotte Avenue School in 1995. She loved her years as an educator and it was always the family joke that she could not go anywhere in the world without running into a former student.
Maddy was very active in the city she loved. She was a member of the Nashua Retired Teachers, the College Club and enjoyed following local politics. She was a proud lifelong Democrat and made her opinions very well known. Throughout the years she enjoyed traveling, her dinners out with friends and attending all of her grandchildrens’ activities. She was a communicant of the Parish of the Resurrection.
Maddy loved her family and her many lifelong friends. Thank you to all who have stayed in touch with her during her recent decline.
Maddy is survived by her daughter Patty (Bernard) Fisher and her husband Mark of Biddeford Maine and her son Jim Bernard and his wife Kim of Nashua. Five grandchildren who were her pride and joy. Kellie Fisher and her fiance Lucas Miller of Scarborough Maine, Darcy Fisher of Boston MA, Daniel Bernard and his fiance Taylor Mitchell of Freeport Maine, Trevor Nelson and his partner Shawn McClintock of Maynard MA, and Joseph Bernard of Nashua NH, as well as many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brother Richard (Dick) Welch Jr., of Florida and her long time friend and companion William Doherty of Pelham NH.
We would like to thank the staff of Langdon Place, where Maddy made her home for the last two years, for their kindness and compassion.
SERVICES: A private mass of Christian burial will be held at Parish of the Resurrection followed by interment at St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Hudson, NH.
