Obituary for Merton W Grant
Merton (“Mert”) W. Grant, 91, died peacefully surrounded by family on October 15, 2019, at Mass. General Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts. He was born on August 10, 1928 in Hollis, Maine, the oldest child of Walter L. Grant and Florence (Bradbury) Grant.
He was the husband of Phyllis Jameson Grant. They were married on December 7, 1957 in East Providence, RI.
Mert attended schools in Hollis, Maine, graduating from Hollis High School in 1946. After serving in the military during the Korean War until 1953, Mert next attended Bryant College in Rhode Island, where he met his future wife, Phyllis, by a chance meeting on the streets of East Providence one cold, wet March afternoon. Phyllis, a nursing student in her formal nurse whites, starched cap and blue cape, was making home visits and ran into an acquaintance who introduced her to his companion, Mert. Her feet cold and wet, Mert invited her to his nearby apartment to warm her toes and ended up warming her heart. From then on, the two were inseparable and that romance led to a wonderful, loving marriage of nearly sixty-two years. After a brief time living in Maine, they moved to NH and raised their family in Nashua. Mert worked for Sanders Associates for 18 years, and spent the last 30 years of his career as a beloved realtor in the Nashua area.
Mert was an avid sports fan, who especially enjoyed watching the Red Sox, Bruins, and Patriots. To the end, he would stay up late to see the final scores. He was also a lifelong fisherman and hunter, joining in his last moose hunt at the age of 85.
Mert was a member of the Gate City Church in Nashua, and for many years was involved with the Gideons ministry. He lived his faith, and was a kind and caring man to his family and many friends. He trusted God and didn’t waste his time worrying about things he couldn’t control. All who knew him will miss his upbeat attitude for life.
He is survived by his wife Phyllis, daughters Jane Grant Tentas (and husband Charles), Jill E. (Grant) Caron (and husband Guy), granddaughters Laura (Tentas) Limbek and Emily Tentas, and grandson Bryce Caron. He is also survived by his siblings, Mary Neal, Walter Grant, and Owen Grant, all of Maine, as well as many nieces and nephews.
