Obituary for Preston Thomas Walsh Jr.

Preston Thomas Walsh Jr., 97, died Thursday, January 5, 2023, at the NH Veterans Home in Tilton, NH after a brief illness. He was born in Nashua, NH to the late Preston and Jeannette (Tessier) Walsh on February 2, 1925. He shared almost 60 years of marriage with the late Virginia (Rasmovich) Walsh. Preston was raised in Nashua and graduated from Nashua High School in 1942.

After graduation he attended the Tilton Boy’s School before enlisting in the US Navy. He served in the Armed Guard as a Signalman Third Class from January 1943 to April 1946. After being honorably discharged from the Navy he entered the University of New Hampshire Thompson School of Agriculture. He graduated in 1948 with an Associate’s Degree in Applied Farming.

He married Virginia Rasmovich on February 18, 1950, at St. Casimir’s church. He was a communicant of St. Casimir’s until its closure. After holding several jobs, including at his father’s business, Walsh’s Diner in Nashua, the Nashua Country Club and New Method Laundry he started his long career at Nashua Corporation in 1952. He started in the mail room and later became a Purchasing Agent. He retired in 1987. After living in Nashua, he moved with his family to Hollis in 1969. He later lived in Milford for several years.

After retiring Preston held several part time jobs including bagging groceries at Alexander’s (now Hannaford), working in the Hollis, NH tax office, working with a local surveyor and delivering for Rice’s Pharmacy. He also worked at Brookdale farm in Hollis packing apples and helping with the pick your own stand.

In his spare time Preston enjoyed square dancing with the Gate City Squares. He and his wife enjoyed the weekly gatherings and occasional trips with the Hollis Seniors Group. He later became a constant presence at the Nashua Senior Center where he enjoyed the company of many friends, playing cribbage and poker. He sang with the Evergreens group in Hollis and the Silver Linings group at the Nashua Senior Center. Both groups put on shows at several senior living facilities in Nashua, Hudson and Hollis. He was a long-time member of the Nashua Elks Lodge and the Hollis VFW.
Preston was predeceased by his parents, wife, young daughter Joanne, son-in-law Matthew Ennis and sister Ruth Freel. He is survived by his daughters, Kathy Ennis of Nashua and Maryellen Walsh of Merrimack, his grandson Matthew of Goffstown, his great grandchildren Zachary (Nicole) Ennis, Matthew Ennis and Micheyla Ennis of Nashua and Noah Ennis of Goffstown, his nephew William (Kathy) Picarillo of Nashua.

His daughters want to thank the wonderful staff of the NH Veterans Home for the wonderful care they gave Preston over the past 20 months and prior to that the caring staff at Laurel Place Assisted Living in Hudson. They also want to thank their wonderful father and mother for all of the help they gave their daughters so they could indulge their love of horses. Both mom and dad became skilled at caring for the horses, driving a horse trailer and became involved with the Groton Pony Club for several years.

SERVICES: Visiting hours will be held at the Davis Funeral Home, 1 Lock Street, Nashua, NH on Thursday, January 12, 2023, from 1pm to 3pm with a service at the funeral home at 3pm. Davis Funeral Home at 1 Lock Street, Nashua, NH is in charge of arrangements. Burial will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers please make a donation to the Nashua Children’s Home, 125 Amherst Street, Nashua, NH 03064 in Preston’s name.
