Shirley (Shear)(Cohen) Lelchuk, age 99, of Hudson, NH, formerly of Nashua, passed away on October 8, 2022, after a period of declining health. She was the widow of Julius Lelchuk who died in 2008, and Elias Cohen who died in 1974.
She was born in Vilna, Poland on Aug. 24, 1923, a daughter of the late Philip & Anna Shear. She has been a resident of Nashua since 1936. Shirley, her late mother Anna, and late sister Ruby with the efforts of her grandparents, Jacob and Bessie Yezersky, were brought to America by them. There she attended and was educated in the Nashua School System.
Shirley was a loving wife and mother to her first husband, Elias Cohen, for many years. They had two daughters, the late Ruth Homer (2015) and the late Patricia Davis (2020). Shirley and Elias worked at Alexander’s Market together until his passing in Sept. of 1974. She then met her late husband, Jules Lelchuk in 1984, and were married on March 24th of that year. Jules passed on Dec. 29, 2008.
In her early years of living in Nashua, she worked at the former Economy Market on W. Hollis St, which she owned with her first husband, Elias Cohen. She also worked for the former Alexander’s Market for 12 years in the bookkeeping / cashier department.
Both Shirley and Jules were very active members of Temple Beth Abraham in Nashua. During her many years here, Mrs. Lelchuk taught Hebrew School and Yiddish Classes, was on the Board of Directors, and was a member of ORT, Sisterhood and was Hadassah Woman of the Year in 1985. She received the Light of Torah Award and along with her husband, Jules, were the first persons at Temple Beth Abraham to receive the Keter Shem Tov “Crown of A Good Name” Award.
Her joy was to volunteer for many good causes. Shirley was a volunteer at the American Red Cross, the Friendship Club, the Nashua Soup Kitchen and Shelter and the DeNicola Breast Cancer Center at Southern NH Medical Center. She was a Past president of the Primetimers Seniors Group at Temple Beth Abraham and had taken courses at Rivier University through RISE.
Survivors include three grandchildren, David Davis, Jay Lichtman, and Barbara Pino; several great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins. She was sister of the late Ruby Baum.
