Obituary for Thomas J.”TJ” McCartney

TJ died peacefully at the Community Hospice House in Merrimack, NH on March 27, 2023. He was born in Albany, NY to the late Mary C. (Mack) and George C. McCartney. TJ attended Westchester Community College where he met the love of his life Maura McEvoy. After college TJ joined the Marine Corp as an Officer in their flight training program. He spent the next 4 years in Pensacola, Florida flying fighter jets.

Eventually, TJ and Maura settled in Nashua, NH where TJ worked for National Gypsum as a salesman. He then landed a job as an Estimator and Project Manager for Francis P. Connor Drywall in Nashua. In 1976 he started his own business, TJ McCartney, Inc. He was a member of the Executive Board of the Association of Wall & Ceiling Industries (AWCI) and served as President in 1995. He credits his success in business to luck and to all of the talented people he met during his time with the AWCI.

TJ lived a very full life with Maura and their 5 children. He and Maura traveled extensively and in their later years spent their summers in Nantucket where they created a lifetime of memories for their children and grandchildren. TJ was an avid fly fisherman and loved his trips with the boys to Canada, Argentina, and Russia in search of the biggest salmon. TJ also enjoyed golfing, skiing and pheasant hunting with his dog Molly. He loved fast cars and on occasion spent time at Limerock racing around the track.

TJ believed in giving back to his community. He was on the board of the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Nashua and served a term as President. He is credited for being the mastermind behind the annual Boys & Girls Club Auction fundraiser that has raised millions for the club over the last 30 years. He was on the Board of New Hampshire Charitable Foundation and United Way of Greater Nashua. Of all of his volunteer roles he was proudest and most fulfilled by his work with Home Health & Hospice, both as a volunteer and Board Member.

TJ is predeceased by his wife Maura (2005), son Michael (2014) and sister Kathleen (2021) and her husband John Chapman (2017). TJ will be missed by his brother Jack McCartney and wife Marion of Washington, DC, his children Chris McCartney of Nashua, NH, David McCartney and his wife Laine of Kittery Point, ME, Mary McCartney and husband Louis Greco of Kittery, ME, daughter Susan McCartney of Exeter, NH, grandchildren Kate McCartney, Andrew McCartney, Maura (McCartney) Rodgers and her husband Riley, Kristyn (McCartney) Stout and her husband David, Ryan McCartney, Hannah Walsh, David Walsh and Great Grandchildren Oliver Rodgers, Derek and Ian Stout.
